Early Everbearer/All season variety
Originally bred for commercial growers, Strawberry ‘Malling Champion’ is a high yielding, high quality variety with superior disease resistance. In trials it demonstrates consistently high yields with each plant frequently producing over 1kg of fruit. Fruit begins to ripen from June, with peak harvest in July and a continuous steady supply throughout August. Large fruits, often exceeding 32mm in size, have firm flesh and good skin guaranteeing an excellent shelf life. The heart-shaped, bright red berries have a sweet flavour and are well presented on long trusses ensuring a quick and easy harvest. Plants are compact with low foliage growth making them perfect for grow-bags, pots and even large hanging baskets. ‘Malling Champion’ is resistant to crown rot and verticillium wilt and shows moderate resistance to powdery mildew. It is also very tolerant of wind and rain damage. Height: 30cm (12in). Spread: 50cm (20in).
Estimated time to cropping once planted: 4-8 months.
Estimated time to best yields: 16-20 months.

Water strawberries frequently throughout the growing season and weed regularly between rows. When growing strawberry plants in baskets and containers, they will also need feeding every two weeks.
From early summer, remove any runners that are produced as these will weaken the plants vigour. Protect the developing fruit from slugs and snails by spreading straw around each plant. Positioning a net over the plants will also prevent crop damage by birds. The netting and straw can be removed after cropping to allow better air flow around the crown of the plant. Mulch strawberry plants with well rotted manure in spring.
Although strawberry plants will continue to fruit in successive years, the crop will become considerably reduced and it is advisable to completely replace strawberry plants every 3 years.
