This handsome and exceptionally hardy tree makes a fine specimen for a large garden or as a hedging species. Valued for its ability to cope with a range of challenging growing conditions, it is tolerant of exposed coastal gardens, pollution, poor, compacted, or high pH soils, drought and waterlogging. Fast-growing and wind-tolerant, it’s an excellent choice for a screening hedge or windbreak tree.
Alongside its robust and adaptable nature, Alnus cordata also exhibits Italian style! A native of Southern Italy and Greece, it has a clean-cut silhouette, forming a lovely conical shape composed of strongly horizontal branches. This alder holds onto its glossy heart-shaped leaves much longer than other trees, often until December. In early spring, yellow pendulous catkins are an attractive feature and are followed by small woody cones which persist on the tree throughout winter.
Ultimate height: 12m (39ft). Ultimate spread: 8m (26ft).

Thompson & Morgan strives to ensure that all its plants are delivered to you in the perfect condition for planting. While the majority of our nursery plants cope well with slight delays in intransit, sadly, the time it takes to deliver to certain locations in the UK means that we can't guarantee this for some of our smaller plug products and tender bedding and vegetable lines, which do not respond well to the extra journey time. So regretfully while we offer the majority of our live plant offering nationwide, we are unable to ship plugs, begging plants and tender vegetable plants to the following areas: HS, IV41-IV49, IV51, IV55-56, KW15-KW17, PA34, PA41-48, PA60-PA78, PA80, PH40-PH44, TR21-TR24, ZE1-ZE3
