Description
Unusual and seldom seen in UK gardens, Akebia quinata makes an intriguing spring display with a hardiness that belies its exotic looks. The palmate, semi-evergreen foliage provides an attractive backdrop for its peculiar maroon-chocolate coloured flowers. Racemes of vanilla scented blooms are borne from March to May - the larger female flowers are cup shaped, while the male flowers are noticeably smaller. During long, hot summers the occasional sausage shaped fruit may develop if two or more plants are grown to pollinate each other. Commonly known as the Chocolate Vine, Akebia quinata is ideal for scaling high fences and pergolas. Its nodding blooms are best appreciated where they can be viewed from below. Height: 10m (32’). Spread: 2m (6’, 5").

Plant height and spread is seasonal therefore we list by pot size rather than a defined plant size. The height and spread of the plant delivered will vary depending on the season, meaning arrival images are an indication only.

How to Grow
Grow Akebia in any reliably moist, well drained soil. Choose a position in sun or semi shade. Once established, avoid moving unless completely necessary as Chocolate Vines resent root disturbance.
More Info
Akebia requires little maintenance. Train the stems onto an appropriate support. After flowering, the stems may be prune to fit the available space.
