Lettuce 'Elyburg' (Iceberg/Cos)

Lactuca sativa

Half-hardy Annual

This breeding breakthrough is a unique cross between Iceberg and Little Gem Cos lettuce. Taking the best characteristics from both parents, Lettuce 'Eleyburg' combines the sweet crunch of Iceberg with the nutrients, flavour and dark colour of Little Gem Cos. Marketed as a 'Gemberg', the neat heads of this compact lettuce have an attractive rosebud appearance. With superb bolting tolerance and downy mildew resistance, Lettuce 'Eleyberg' is ideal for successional sowings. Height and spread: 20cm (8").

Ideal For:
patio, kitchen garden
Sowing Months:
March, April, May, June, July, August
sun or semi shade
    • 1 packet (200 lettuce seeds)

    • Despatch: Within 24 hours
    • £2.69
Direct sow lettuce seeds outdoors from March to August into well prepared, fertile, moist soil in sun or semi shade. Sow seeds thinly at a depth of 1cm (½in) in drills 30cm (12”) apart in soil which has been raked to a fine tilth. When large enough to handle, thin out seedlings to 30cm (12”) apart and cover with a protective netting or fleece to prevent attack from birds and insects. Make regular sowings for a constant supply.
Water lettuce frequently and hoe between plants regularly to prevent weeds from establishing. Dry weather may cause heads of lettuce plants to bolt so watering is particularly critical during the 2 weeks before harvesting. A thick mulch applied around the plants will help to retain moisture in the soil. Harvest lettuce when required by pulling up the entire plant before trimming off the stem with a knife.
Seeds and garden supplies will normally be delivered within the time period stated against each product as detailed above.

  1. Most successful

    By Amanda Burrows 12-11-2016

These were my most successful lettuces this summer. Less bothered by slugs than the others. They produced sweet crisp leaves, with no wasted outer leaves. A good size for two of us. They showed excellent germination sown direct in late summer/autumn. They even survived low temperatures in early winter with a light fleece covering, without losing quality. Will definitely be growing these again next year.

Thank you very much for your review. I am very pleased that you have been happy with your lettuce purchase and thank you so much for taking the time to let us know. I hope we can continue to be of service to you in the future.

  2. crisp and satisfying

    By Brenda Temple 27-07-2015

More cabbage like in its form than limp lettuce. This grew beautifully, has stood well in the garden and makes delicious sandwiches with crunch.

Thank you for your review. I am glad to hear of the success with your seeds. I hope we can continue to be of service to you in future.
