Direct sow winter radish seeds from April to July outdoors. Grow winter radish in a well prepared fertile, moist, free draining seedbed in full sun or semi shade. Sow winter radish seeds thinly at a depth of 1cm (½") in drills 15cm (6") apart. When large enough to handle, thin out the seedlings within each row to 2.5cm (1") apart. Where space is limited, growing winter radish in patio containers will also produce a worthwhile crop.
When growing winter radishes, prevent them running to seed by keeping plants cool and well watered, particularly during hot, dry periods. Excessive watering should also be avoided as this will encourage radish leaf growth instead of root development. Protect winter crops with cloches. Winter radishes can stay in situ until Christmas or can be lifted and stored when they are about 10cm (4") long.

  1. Unusual variety and must try

    By Peter Aleksandrovics 14-08-2012

I have sown these variety for the first time this year and it came on in leaps and bounds despite the awful weather we've all had this summer. It tastes delicious and even though it will store very well for months unlike its European counterpart I doubt there will be any left for so long. My advice is to sow plenty of it, some for immediate consumption and some for storage as you won'y find it in your typical supermarket.
