Chili Pepper 'Summer Heat' F1 Hybrid (Hot - Jalapeno)

Capsicum annuum, Chili Pepper

Half-hardy Annual

 Customer Rating

An early ripening Jalapeno pepper with long, slightly tapered, 9cm (3½") fruits. Traditionally the chillies are picked green, but can be left to ripen to red. The unusual 'scarred' skin of Jalapeno 'Summer Heat' is a desired trait of Mexican Jalapenos which are commonly used on pizzas for their pungent, hot flavour. This variety is suitable for growing indoors or outside on a sunny patio. Height: 75cm (30"). Spread: 50cm (20").

How to grow chilli peppers

March, April
full sun
    • 1 packet (10 chili pepper seeds)

Sow Chili Pepper seeds on the surface of a good, free-draining, damp, seed sowing mix and cover with a fine sprinkling of compost or vermiculite. Place seed trays in a propagator at a temperature of 18-25C (64-77F) until after germination, which takes 7-10 days. Do not exclude light as this helps germination.

When seedlings are large enough to handle, transplant into individual 7.5cm (3") pots of compost and grow on in cooler conditions. When plants are well grown and all risk of frost has passed, transplant them into grow bags and containers, or plant them in well prepared beds of fertile, moist, well drained soil. Chili peppers may be grown undercover in a greenhouse or polytunnel, or grown outdoors in a sheltered position in full sun. When growing chilli peppers outdoors, gradually acclimatise them to outdoor conditions over a period of 7 to 10 days prior to transplanting them. Space pepper plants at a distance of 50cm (20") apart.

Water chili pepper plants regularly throughout the growing season and feed weekly with a high potash tomato fertiliser once the first fruits have set. Taller varieties of chili peppers may require staking. Provide a thick mulch of organic matter around the base of the plants to help conserve moisture and reduce weed growth. In greenhouses, maintain high humidity by damping down paths daily. Harvest chilies singly by cutting them from the plant with secateurs or pull the entire plant when full of red peppers, and hang upside down in the kitchen for use over several months. Chili peppers grown outdoors must be harvested before the first frosts.

  1. NOT Jalapeno Peppers

    By Sathiyapriya Palanichamy 21-09-2015

I have planted all of them , 4 plants has survived, Grown in to healthy plants and fruited in August. I was hopeful to taste the 'Hot and Spicy' peppers, but they are not hot at all as described. I was disappointed after I have tasted them and I am not picking them anymore . They do not have spicy flavour that I normally find it in Pizzas !

I ordered these seed and planted all 10 of them, i put them into my grandmother's propagator and they all germinated. After a couple of days they all shriveled up and died except from one. (they all had enough water/heat and sun!)
