Broad Bean Collection

Vicia faba, Fava Beans

Hardy Annual

Broad beans are high in protein, productive, and easy to grow in most soils and conditions. Delicious eaten fresh and steamed, but any surplus crops freeze particularly well. This Broad Bean Collection contains 3 superb varieties. Height: Up to 120cm (47"). Spread: 45cm (18").

  • Collection comprises one packet each of:
  • Broad Bean 'Aquadulce Claudia' - This variety is universally recognised as being best for an autumn sowing to produce a very early crop of delicious, white seeded pods.
  • Broad Bean 'Imperial Green Longpod' - This RHS AGM variety produces large, 37cm (15") green seeded pods, each containing up to 9 large beans.
  • Broad Bean 'Express' - The fastest maturing, white seeded variety producing a high number of pods per plant! A particularly good choice for freezing as the beans will not discolour.

Companion planting: Try growing broad beans with summer savory to help repel black bean aphids, a common pest of broad beans.

Sow Aquadulce Claudia in November - December to overwinter, cloche protection may promote stronger plants.

All three varieties can be sown in 5cm (2in) pots or seedtrays from January to April to transplant, or direct sow if soil conditions allow

Grow beans in full sun on rich fertile, well manured soil with protection from strong winds. Plant broad beans in double rows set 23cm (9") apart and allowing at least 60cm (24") between each double row. Sow broad beans at a depth of 5cm (2") deep and a distance of 23cm (9") apart within each row and water well. Germination usually takes around 10 days.

When growing broad beans, support the plants by placing a cane or stout stick at each corner of a double row and tying in with string, especially in windy gardens. Keep well watered, particularly as flowers begin to set and hoe between rows regularly. Pinch out the growing tips after the first flowers have set pods to deter blackfly and encourage further pods to set. Harvest broad beans when the pods are well filled and the seed still soft.
Seeds and garden supplies will normally be delivered within the time period stated against each product as detailed above.
