Parsnip 'Gladiator' F1 Hybrid

Pastinaca sativa

Hardy Annual

  • RHS Award of Garden Merit
A superb RHS AGM F1 hybrid that is ideal for exhibition, with beautiful silky-smooth blemish free, white skins. The high quality roots hav a deliciously sweet, earthy flavour. Parsnip 'Gladiator' is consistently reliable and trouble free, with particularly good resistance to canker. Height and spread: 45cm (18").

Sue Foster says: "The first parsnip I grew - and what a fantastic crop! This canker resistant variety produces long, smooth roots that are delicious roasted and makes phenomenal Parsnip and Ginger soup. After a couple of frosts the flavour is exceptional, and they keep in the ground for an impressive length of time without turning woody."

Ideal For:
kitchen garden
Sowing Months:
April, May
sun or semi shade
    • 1 packet (250 parsnip seeds)

    • Despatch: by Monday
    • £2.99

Direct sow parsnip seeds outdoors from April to May to produce quality roots with less risk of canker damage. Avoid sowing in cold or wet soils. Grow parsnips in a sunny position in stone-free, well prepared soil that has been deeply cultivated. Parsnips prefer a fertile, light, well drained soil, which has been manured for a previous crop.

Sow parsnip seeds thinly at a depth of 2cm (¾in) in drills 30cm (12") apart. Germination is slow and may take up to 28 days. When large enough to handle, thin out the seedlings within each row to 7cm (3in) apart or 10cm (4") apart if larger roots are required.

Water well to encourage germination. Once germinated, parsnips should be watered only when necessary to keep the soil moist. Keep beds weed free at all times.

Harvest parsnips from October through to January, as and when required. However, their flavour will be sweeter if they are left in the ground as winter approaches. Alternatively lift and store parsnips in boxes of barely moist soil, peat or sand, and store in a cool place. Roots can be stored like this for up to 4 months. Loosen the soil around the roots with a fork before lifting them to avoid damaging the roots. Leaves will die off during winter, so put a short cane by each root so you can easily find them again to lift.

  1. THE best parsnip!

    By Teresa N'Guessan 02-04-2016

Wonderful taste and very long standing. Two produced the biggest parsnips I've ever seen - 10cm across and 15cm long - still tender and delicious right through. I'll be growing these every year.

  2. mix up of seeds

    By elizabeth squiers 11-04-2014

I purchased 2 packets of seeds of Parsnips (US$2.99) each. I have opened one, the top of both read “packed for y/r end dec 2013, sell by y/r end dec 2013, 1008499/10 seed origin the Netherlands aug contents 300 seeds”. When I opened the first to my surprise instead of a inner packet of parsnips I found a packet labeled Squash 20-0619 1105964/11. Unfortunately I discovered the squash seeds upon opening the packet (I had not read the inner packet first not expecting this surprise). The second packet I can feel, and it has the same seeds in it (I can tell comparing the 2-the second I have not opened)I purchased the seeds of parsnips, but inside instead there was a packet of squash seeds.Even after sending a picture to the company of the seed packet with the clear manufacturing error/to the affiliate they did nothing. Horrible service

Thank you for your review. I am very sorry to hear that you did not receive the correct seeds within your seed packets. If you would like to contact our Customer care team on, one of our agents will be happy to investigate this matter further.
