Tomato 'Sweet Aperitif'

Solanum lycopersicum L.

Half-hardy Annual

 Customer Rating

Cordon

With its multi branching habit, this red skinned cherry tomato produces excellent yields of delicious, bite sized fruits. Each fruit weighs approximately 12g and when grown in the greenhouse over a long period, up to 500 thin-skinned, shiny red cherry fruits are produced per plant - that’s about 6kg (13 lbs)! Tomato ‘Sweet Aperitif’ has a high sugar content and just the right amount of acidity which combine beautifully for a sweet, but refreshing flavour. This cordon variety can be grown in the greenhouse, or in a sheltered, sunny spot outdoors. Height: 200cm (79"). Spread: 50cm (20").

Companion planting: Try growing tomatoes with French marigolds to deter whitefly, and basil, chives or mint to deter aphids and other pests.

Pot up, and grow tomato plants on in warm frost free conditions until large enough to plant outdoors. When all risk of frost has passed, gradually acclimatise them to outdoor conditions over a period of 7 to 10 days.

Choose a sheltered position in full sun on fertile, reliably moist, well drained soil, and transplant at a distance of 60cm (24") apart. Alternatively grow tomatoes in patio bags and containers in good quality compost such as John Innes No. 2. Drive a (5') cane into the soil adjacent to each plant to support them as they grow, and tie each main stem to its support with soft garden twine.

Water tomato plants frequently, to keep the compost evenly moist. Feed tomatoes regularly with a high potash plant food once the first truss of fruit has formed.

Tie the main stems to their supports and remove any sideshoots that develop between the main stem and the leaf stems. Once the plant has produced 6 or 7 trusses, pinch out the top of the main stem. This process of "sideshooting" and "stopping" will increase the availability of light and air movement around the developing fruit, and focus the plants energy on producing a good crop of high quality tomatoes. Tomatoes can be harvested as they ripen from July to September.

  1. I agree with hopeless

My story is vertually identical to the one entitled "hopeless". As per the instruction from morgan & thompson I called customer services I called (I too have no intention of ordering anything else). It was a waste of a phonecall. I wont be ordering anything else from this company.

  2. HOPELESS.

    By STEPHEN COLE 17-05-2015

THE 10 PLUGS I ORDERED WERE NOT DELIVERED. INSTEAD 5 LARGER VERY POOR QUALITY PLANTS WERE DELIVERED. IT WOULD HAVE BEEN POLITE TO ASK ME BEFORE SENDING THEM. AS FOR THE £5. VOUCHER, I SHALL NOT BE USING IT AS I HAVE NO INTENTION OF MAKING ANY FURTHER ORDERS. I DO NOT ADVISE OTHERS TO EITHER. I GREW BETTER PLANTS MYSELF FROM SEED THIS YEAR.
