Tomato 'Sweet Aperitif'

Solanum lycopersicum L.

Half-hardy Annual

 Customer Rating

Cordon

With its multi branching habit, this red skinned cherry tomato produces excellent yields of delicious, bite sized fruits. Each fruit weighs approximately 12g and when grown in the greenhouse over a long period, up to 500 thin-skinned, shiny red cherry fruits are produced per plant - that’s about 6kg (13 lbs)! Tomato ‘Sweet Aperitif’ has a high sugar content and just the right amount of acidity which combine beautifully for a sweet, but refreshing flavour. This cordon variety can be grown in the greenhouse, or in a sheltered, sunny spot outdoors. Height: 200cm (79"). Spread: 50cm (20").

Companion planting: Try growing tomatoes with French marigolds to deter whitefly, and basil, chives or mint to deter aphids and other pests.

Pot up, and grow tomato plants on in warm frost free conditions until large enough to plant outdoors. When all risk of frost has passed, gradually acclimatise them to outdoor conditions over a period of 7 to 10 days.

Choose a sheltered position in full sun on fertile, reliably moist, well drained soil, and transplant at a distance of 60cm (24") apart. Alternatively grow tomatoes in patio bags and containers in good quality compost such as John Innes No. 2. Drive a (5') cane into the soil adjacent to each plant to support them as they grow, and tie each main stem to its support with soft garden twine.

Water tomato plants frequently, to keep the compost evenly moist. Feed tomatoes regularly with a high potash plant food once the first truss of fruit has formed.

Tie the main stems to their supports and remove any sideshoots that develop between the main stem and the leaf stems. Once the plant has produced 6 or 7 trusses, pinch out the top of the main stem. This process of "sideshooting" and "stopping" will increase the availability of light and air movement around the developing fruit, and focus the plants energy on producing a good crop of high quality tomatoes. Tomatoes can be harvested as they ripen from July to September.

  1. Delicious

Was glad of the five free pants last spring - fantastically tasty. I'm hoping to grow some from my own saved seeds next season. Thank you Thompson & Morgan!

  2. Absolutely gorgeous!

    By Shirley Sabin 27-10-2013

I was astonished to find the 5 plants were small enough to go through my letterbox, but sure enough, after potting them up, they grew into sturdy plants, which have given me an excellent crop of totally gorgeous tomatoes. They were grown and cropped outdoors in 12" pots. I shall grow them again next year, possibly from seed, but will put them into the open ground. It will be interesting to compare with this year's result.
