Tomato 'Sungold'

Solanum lycopersicum L.

Half-hardy Annual

 Customer Rating
  • Celebrating 20 years of the sweetest tomato, as voted by gardeners
  • Bite-sized orange fruits

Cordon.

An outstanding cordon cherry tomato for glasshouse or outdoor culture. Tomato 'Sungold' has an exceptionally high sugar content, that easily rivals 'Gardeners Delight', making its attractive, golden-orange fruit irresistibly sweet and juicy. The high yields of delicious fruit (each approximately 13g) are ideal for salads or as a tasty snack. This popular variety also has good resistance to tobacco mosaic virus and fusarium wilt. Height: 200cm (79”). Spread: 50cm (20”).

Tomato 'Sungold' plants are delivered from late April for growing under glass and from late May for growing outdoors.

Please note: Delivery is subject to plant size, and adverse growing conditions during production may delay despatch schedules.

Companion planting: Try growing tomatoes with French marigolds to deter whitefly, and basil, chives or mint to deter aphids and other pests.

Pot up, and grow tomato plants on in warm frost free conditions until large enough to plant outdoors. When all risk of frost has passed, gradually acclimatise them to outdoor conditions over a period of 7 to 10 days.

Choose a sheltered position in full sun on fertile, reliably moist, well drained soil, and transplant at a distance of 60cm (24") apart. Alternatively grow tomatoes in patio bags and containers in good quality compost such as John Innes No. 2. Drive a (5') cane into the soil adjacent to each plant to support them as they grow, and tie each main stem to its support with soft garden twine.

Water tomato plants frequently, to keep the compost evenly moist. Feed tomatoes regularly with a high potash plant food once the first truss of fruit has formed.

Tie the main stems to their supports and remove any sideshoots that develop between the main stem and the leaf stems. Once the plant has produced 6 or 7 trusses, pinch out the top of the main stem. This process of "sideshooting" and "stopping" will increase the availability of light and air movement around the developing fruit, and focus the plants energy on producing a good crop of high quality tomatoes. Tomatoes can be harvested as they ripen from July to September.

  1. Plugs in poor condition

    By Chris Andrew 13-05-2014

Dear Sir/Madam, I received my Sungold tomato plugs from you 03/05/14 and my plants were in poor condition, some with yellow/black leaves, some with damaged leaves, some dried out. I have potted them on in an attempt to salvage them but its early days. Most of the leaves are curled up at the ends and black so it does not look great. So what do we do about it?? Kind regards Chris
