Tomato 'Sungold'

Solanum lycopersicum L.

Half-hardy Annual

 Customer Rating

An outstanding cordon cherry tomato for glasshouse or outdoor culture. Tomato 'Sungold' has an exceptionally high sugar content, which easily rivals 'Gardeners Delight', making its attractive, golden-orange fruit irresistibly sweet and juicy. The high yields of delicious thin-skinned fruit (each approximately 13g) are ideal for salads or as a tasty snack. This popular variety also has good resistance to tobacco mosaic virus and fusarium wilt. A hardy nature ensures this vigorous performer will crop well into winter in a cool greenhouse. Height: 200cm (79"). Spread: 50cm (20").

Tomato 'Sungold' plants are delivered from late April for growing under glass and from late May for growing outdoors.

Please note: Delivery is subject to plant size, and adverse growing conditions during production may delay despatch schedules.

Companion planting: Try growing tomatoes with French marigolds to deter whitefly, and basil, chives or mint to deter aphids and other pests.

Pot up, and grow tomato plants on in warm frost free conditions until large enough to plant outdoors. When all risk of frost has passed, gradually acclimatise them to outdoor conditions over a period of 7 to 10 days.

Choose a sheltered position in full sun on fertile, reliably moist, well drained soil, and transplant at a distance of 60cm (24") apart. Alternatively grow tomatoes in patio bags and containers in good quality compost such as John Innes No. 2. Drive a (5') cane into the soil adjacent to each plant to support them as they grow, and tie each main stem to its support with soft garden twine.

Water tomato plants frequently, to keep the compost evenly moist. Feed tomatoes regularly with a high potash plant food once the first truss of fruit has formed.

Tie the main stems to their supports and remove any sideshoots that develop between the main stem and the leaf stems. Once the plant has produced 6 or 7 trusses, pinch out the top of the main stem. This process of "sideshooting" and "stopping" will increase the availability of light and air movement around the developing fruit, and focus the plants energy on producing a good crop of high quality tomatoes. Tomatoes can be harvested as they ripen from July to October.

  1. Sweetest tomatoes that I have ever tasted

    By 28-09-2016

I would like to congratulate you and thank you on your advert that I saw in the Saturday morning Daily Mail which I took dated 16th April this year, for both the honesty and detail you spoke of in that advert, for Sungold tomatoes. I sent for them on Monday 18th April and ou delivered them in May as you said you would. I followed your instructions on what to do with them on their arrival and how to set them, now everything has turned out as you said they would. It is exactly the truth, I have dozens and dozens of tomatoes and still have loads to pick. I can honestly say that they are the sweetest tomatoes that I have ever tasted, and by the way, I am in my eighties! My hope is that you will be having them again next year. Once again I give you my heartfelt thanks for this produce.

  2. Reliable and delicious

    By Caroline Broome 02-10-2015

Although 2 out of the 5 plugs failed shortly after delivery the remaining three grew steadily, were disease resistant, and produced a high yield. Considering we have had a below average summer with low temperatures and less sunshine than hoped for, the fruits ripened by end September, and the remaining green ones soon turned when put in a bag with a banana. No waste and no stress.
