Tomato 'Mountain Magic'

Solanum lycopersicum L.

Half-hardy Annual

For blight-free tomato growing this season look no further than Mountain Magic F1. This top-performing cordon-trained variety is ideal for sunny veg patches and borders, as well as grow bags and patio containers. Combining the rich flavour of heritage varieties with modern F1 hybrid disease resistance, this tasty tom has everything going for it!

Mountain Magic F1 is truly all-purpose - eat it from the vine, slice for salads and sandwiches, or use as a cooker or sauce base.

Not only does it have good resistance to early blight, it carries the late blight-busting Ph-2 and Ph-3 genes, giving it full protection against all current British strains including Pink6 and Blue13, the most virulent to hit UK crops. It also has in built genetic resistance to both verticillium and fusarium wilt and cracking.

To top it off you will be hard pushed to find better flavour from such a disease resistant variety. Mountain Magic F1 takes on a high sugar level from its grape tomato parentage. The smooth, uniform, evenly-coloured fruits, each weighing around 56g, have consistently been rated high in flavour compared to heritage varieties such as Brandywine. Height: 130cm (52"). Spread: 120cm (47")

Pot up, and grow tomato plants on in warm frost free conditions until large enough to plant outdoors. When all risk of frost has passed, gradually acclimatise them to outdoor conditions over a period of 7 to 10 days.

Choose a sheltered position in full sun on fertile, reliably moist, well drained soil, and transplant at a distance of 60cm (24") apart. If growing in the glasshouse, allow 3 plants per growbag, or one per 25cm pot (10in, alternatiely, plant tomatoes directly into the greenhouse soil. Drive a (5') cane into the soil adjacent to each plant to support them as they grow, and tie each main stem to its support with soft garden twine.

Water tomato plants frequently, to keep the compost evenly moist. Feed tomatoes regularly with a high potash plant food once the first truss of fruit has formed.

Tie the main stems to their supports and remove any sideshoots that develop between the main stem and the leaf stems. Once the plant has produced 6 or 7 trusses, pinch out the top of the main stem. This process of 'sideshooting' and 'stopping' will increase the availability of light and air movement around the developing fruit, and focus the plants energy on producing a good crop of high quality tomatoes. Tomatoes can be harvested as they ripen from July to October.

  2. Blight free at last

    By Delphine Lettau 21-09-2016

After losing all my tomato plants in early August last year, I tried these and they've certainly lived up to the billing. Cropping a little later than the Losetto, they are producing a steady crop on a daily basis -- firm and tasty, the perfect salad tom. There are masses on the vines about to ripen, and not a whiff of blight. Roll on next season!
