Description

In the course of our travels to the various seed trial grounds around the world, we have rediscovered this heirloom variety, first offered by Thompson & Morgan in 1933 and a real breakthrough in Calendula breeding in its time. Bushy, freeflowering plants produce masses of gorgeous, double, citron-yellow blooms with long, wide, drooping petals resembling those of a Chrysanthemum. Chrysantha still has a place in the garden, adding height to borders, and as an individual cut flower. Height: 60-70cm (24-28in).

Sowing Instructions

Sow outdoors where they are to flower. Prepare the ground well and rake to a fine tilth before sowing. Sow 13mm (½in) deep, in rows 30cm (12in) apart.

For Spring/Summer Flowering Pot Plants: Sow in a cool greenhouse or conservatory in late summer/early autumn. Grow on cool in full light and water sparingly.

Growing Instructions

When large enough to handle, thin out seedlings to 20cm (8in) apart.

Kitchen Notes

The petals can be used as a substitute for saffron, added to soups, rice or omelettes. They also make a bright addition to salads. Write to us for a free leaflet with recipes for a wide range of edible flowers.
