Hyacinth 'Midnight Mystic'®

Hyacinthus orientalis

Hardy Bulb

 Customer Rating

Rare and highly sought after, this is the first and original black hyacinth! Available again due to popular demand - you won't find this variety for sale anywhere else! Launched to a frenzy of interest at the Chelsea Flower Show in 2005, Hyacinth 'Midnight Mystic'® was soon completely sold out. A real breakthrough in breeding, Thompson & Morgan spent 16 years developing just three mother bulbs and the result is this stunning, unusual hardy black hyacinth with a heavenly scent. Try it in contemporary silver patio pots, or grow it in beds and borders. Either way, make sure it's on show for all to enjoy! Height: 20cm (8”). Spread: 8cm (3”). Bulb size: 15/16.

For the darkest black blooms, Hyacinth 'Midnight Mystic'® must be grown outdoors, as flowers will appear purple in colour when 'forced' for indoor cultivation.

Grow hyacinths in moist, fertile well drained soil in sun or semi shade. Plant hyacinth bulbs approximately 10cm (4") deep and at a distance of 8cm (3") apart.

To grow hyacinths for indoor displays, plant them in containers of bulb fibre or potting compost with the tip of the bulb just visible above the soil surface. Position them in a cool garage or other well ventilated, dark position at a maximum temperature of 7°C (44°F) for around 6 weeks. Water bulbs only when necessary in order to keep the compost moist. When the growing shoots reach a height of 3cm (1"), move the containers to a cool bright position indoors.

Water container-grown hyacinths with care. Avoid over wetting the compost or allowing it to dry out. After flowering, indoor displays can be planted out doors where they will bloom the following spring. Hyacinths that are planted outdoors are virtually maintenance free. Caution: irritant to skin and eyes, harmful if eaten.

Reviews
  1. Good.

    By Terence Barlow 29-04-2013

Very easy to grow. They are infact a very dark purple, can also see black there aswell, from a distance they seem quite black, close up, a lovely deep purple, with a lovely shiny sheen, I have got 18 of these out, look very nice, and when I sat out, every so often, there was a wift of lovely scent. A tad expensive, but, rare, and worth it. Thanks TM for these.

  2. Expensive

A great shame about the price. The three Bulbs I planted certainly delivered the goods .I must admit part of me was expecting dark blue but these were so close to black in colour. They produced lovely full heads of flowers despite the very hard winter and frosts. It will be interesting to see what happens next spring

  3. blackest flower i've seen

    By Warwick Furnell 21-08-2011

i was a bit dubious about these when i first got them, thinking that the picture had been altered in some way, But when these actually flowered the first time i was blown away they were almost pure black, with an excellent scent too, definitely recommend..
