Lingonberry 'Ida'

Vaccinium vitis-idaea, Cowberry, Mountain Cranberry

Hardy Shrub

Dwarf, self fertile, evergreen plants bear small pink flowers that form juicy red berries from September with a pleasant sharp flavour. Similar to cranberries, these tasty fruits can be used in jams, sauces and pies. Exceptional hardiness, pest and disease resistance, and drought tolerance make Lingonberry 'Ida' the ideal patio plant for the forgetful gardener! Perfect for containers or let them form a dense matt for weed suppressing ground cover in borders. Height: 20cm (8”). Spread: 30cm (12”).

Lingonberry plants require a well drained, acid soil in a sunny or semi shaded position. When growing lingonberry plants in areas where acid soil does not naturally occur, try planting them in patio containers using a mix of ericaceous compost and John Innes No. 3.
If possible, lingonberry bushes should be watered with rainwater because the lime contained in tap water will reduce the acidity in the soil over time. However, they are surprisingly drought tolerant and dislike being overwatered. As fruits begin to develop, cover the plants with netting to protect the berries from birds. Lingonberries require little pruning except for the occasional removal of damaged or misplaced shoots. Culinary note: Lingonberries are high in vitamins and nutrients. They can be used to make excellent jams, sauces and pies.
