Large luscious red fruits are produced in profusion from mid July through August, producing up to 2½kg (6lb) from a single plant in a season. Redcurrant ‘Rovada’ bears its generous crop in long strings making them particularly easy to harvest. Redcurrants have a long cropping season, freeze well and are perfect for pies and jams. Height and spread: 120cm (47”).
Estimated time to cropping once planted: 4-8 months.
Estimated time to best yields: 16-20 months.
We supply established, healthy 1-year old bareroot pre-pruned plants which will quickly establish once planted. Cordon - Ideal for small gardens as they take up little space planted against walls and fences. Each tree becomes a trunk with short side branches on which fruit forms.
Keep redcurrant plants well watered during dry periods, particularly as the fruits are developing. Netting the bushes will help to protect the currants from birds. Redcurrants can be harvested from July. Cordons will require pruning twice a year to maintain their shape. Redcurrants form fruit on 2 year old wood, so after planting cut back the leading shoot by half and reduce all other shoots back to 1 bud from the main stem. Take care not to cut back into the previous year's wood. In summer cut back any new side shoots to five leaves. In subsequent years, continue to cut this year's shoots back in winter to 1 bud from the previous year's wood, and prune new shoots in summer back to 5 leaves.Culinary note: Redcurrants are delicious when eaten fresh or added to a colourful and tasty summer pudding. Suitable for freezing.
