Portulaca grandiflora 'Happy Hour Mixture'

Rose Moss, Purslane

Half-hardy Annual

These dwarf trailing succulents simply love hot, dry conditions, making them perfect for ground cover, tumbling down banks or spilling out from rockeries. Portulaca grandiflora 'Happy Hour Mixture' is drought tolerant once established and copes well with coastal conditions. Height: 25cm (10"). Spread: 30cm (12").

Sow Portulaca seed from February to March on the surface of a good seed compost, and gently firm down. Do not cover the seed. Place in a propagator at a temperature of 18-21C (64-70F) or seal the seed tray inside a polythene bag until after germination, which usually takes 7- 14 days. Do not exclude light, as this helps germination.

When seedlings are large enough to handle, transplant into 7.5cm (3") pots and grow on in cooler conditions. When Portulaca plants are well grown and all risk of frost has passed, gradually acclimatise them to outdoor conditions for 10-15 days before planting outdoors. Grow Portulaca in full sun on any light, well drained soil, spaced at a distance of 30cm (12") apart.

CAUTION: Begonia seeds are dust-like. To open packet, hold over a sheet of white paper, cut along three sides of the inner pack and carefully open out flat. Tap the packet gently to dislodge the seed.

Feed and water Portulaca plants until fully established. Once established they require little attention and cope well on dry soils.

I bought these as plug plants and they are growing in an old stone trough and even though it's been very wet here - they are flowering really well. They look like little jewels and I am delighted with them. Will defin itely buy these again next year.
