  1. Pale imitation of former self

    By Duncan Billingham 03-06-2016

I have been growing T&M Linum Narbonense since 2009. The plant since 2015 is a pale imitation of its former self: no longer worth the effort or the garden space. Until 2015 germination was poor (5%) and the few seedlings attained temperamental to grow on. However, the final plant was a delight. Strong upright stems to 60cm with a profusion of strong, electric blue, showy, 2cm flowers. With a small footprint in the soil, the wiry stems fan out to give a fantastic long show. 2015 I again set a pack of T&M seeds. Unusually, germination was rapid and profuse. The seedlings much weaker than previous years. Spindly cotton like stems, shorter at 20cm and tiny, weak, short-lived, flowers. Planted they became no sturdier or showier. Inferior in every way. Again in 2016 the plants are a pathetic shadow of pre-2015. I love the established ones in my garden from previous years. I won't be buying again. I wish T&M would go back to the original strain. Until then don't waste your time.
