Nasturtium 'Phoenix'

Tropaeolum minus, Indian Cress

Half-hardy Annual

Curious split petals make the flame-like flowers of Nasturium 'Phoenix' particularly eye catching. Prolific and free flowering, the blooms are produced in abundance in beautiful fiery shades of gold, orange and red. Like all Nasturtiums, it's easy to grow. Let its bushy stems spill from hanging baskets and window boxes or create a carpet of colour in beds and borders. Height: 30cm (12"). Spread: 35cm (14").

Culinary note: The peppery flavour of the leaves and colourful flowers will enrich salads and the unripened seeds can used like capers – delicious combined with cream cheese or butter in canapés. For more details about edible flowers click here.

Direct sow nasturtiums outdoors where they are to grow from March to May. Choose a position in full sun on well drained soil which has been raked to a fine tilth. Sow nasturtium seeds thinly, at a depth of 20mm (¾") in drills spaced 30cm (12") apart and cover seed with its own depth of soil. Water the ground regularly, especially during dry periods. Germination usually takes 7-12 days. When nasturtium seedlings are large enough to handle, thin them to 30cm (12") apart.

Alternatively, sow nasturtiums indoors from at a temperature of 15-25C (59-77F). When nasturtium plants are large enough to handle, transplant and grow them on in cooler conditions until large enough to plant outdoors after all risk of frost has passed.

Water regularly until plants are fully established. Growing nasturtiums is easy and once established, they require little attention.

  1. Nice flowers, shame about the black fly..

    By Kathryn Grayson 12-08-2015

I bought two packets of these seeds to try in our garden, as the flowers look so unusual in the pictures. I planted one packet in several containers round the garden, and the other packet of seeds I planted in the borders, to see if the plants have a 'preferred location'. They all geminated well, and grew nice strong leaves and even produced a few flowers... but then every single plant was absolutely swamped with blackfly. I ended up pulling every single 'Phoenix' nasturtium out because they looked so ugly smothered the little black blighters. It's a shame, because the flowers really are pretty. I have to add that I have some other nasturtiums growing in the garden and they have not been affected by blackfly this year.
