Scabious 'Ace of Spades'

Scabiosa atropurpurea, Pincushion Flower

Hardy Annual

Fully double, pin cushion flower heads which are as near to black as can be. Gently fragrant, they make good cut flowers and will no doubt cause interest in this haunting colour. Easy to grow and an excellent filler for the border.

Sow where they are to flower in April/May 3mm (Vain) deep in rows 30cm (12in) apart in well cultivated soil which has been raked to a fine tilth.They can also be sown indoors in April/May at a temperature of 18-25C (65-75F), hardened off and planted out after all risk of frost.

Thin out the seedlings to 30cm (12in) apart. They prefer light, well drained soil and an open sunny position.

Despatch: Within 24 hours applies to orders placed online from Sunday to Thursday. Orders placed online on Friday or Saturday will be despatched on Monday. Please note that for Bank Holiday weekends, orders placed Friday to Sunday will be despatched on Tuesday.

Orders for packets of seed incur a P&P charge of £1.95.
Orders which include any other products will incur a P&P charge of £4.95.
Where an order includes both packets of seeds and other products a maximum P&P charge of £6.90 will apply - regardless of the number of items ordered.

    If you don't get poor germination and can avoid damping off of the seedlings, both factors that this variety seem to be affected by, I seem to have these problems every year but only with Ace of Spades, then this is a show stopper for later in the season and will go on and on. In a mild winter you'll get a second year out of them if you're lucky.
