Poppy 'Plum Pudding'

Papaver orientale, Oriental Poppy

Hardy Perennial

  • New in 2014
  • Flower of the year 2014
From T&M's own breeding programme comes this superb Oriental poppy. Beautiful tissue-like blooms in a rich shade of plum-pink appear from June, and often give a second display later in the summer. Previously only available as cutting-raised plants, Poppy 'Plum Pudding' is an entirely new colour in seed-raised poppies! The strong stems and non-fading flowers are longer lasting than most varieties, making this a significant improvement on the popular variety 'Patty's Plum'. By late summer Poppy 'Plum Pudding' produces attractive seed heads that make an eye catching feature in wildlife or cottage garden borders. Height: 75cm (30"). Spread: 60cm (24").

Sow Oriental poppy seeds from February to May on the surface of a free draining, damp seed compost at a temperature of around 15°C (59°F). Do not cover the seed. Place in a propagator or seal container inside a polythene bag until after germination which usually takes 10-21 days. Do not exclude light at any stage, as this helps germination.

Transplant poppy seedlings when large enough to handle, into 7.5cm (3") pots or module trays. Grow on in cool, well lit conditions. When poppy plants are well grown, gradually acclimatise them to outdoor conditions for 7-10 days before planting outdoors. Plant poppies at a distance of 30cm (12") apart in a sunny position on fertile, well-drained soil. Later sowings can be overwintered in a cold frame and planted out the following spring. Alternatively, direct sow poppy seeds outdoors where they are to grow in spring or autumn. Rake the soil to a fine tilth and sow seeds thinly, just below the soil surface. Water the ground regularly, especially during dry periods. When Poppy seedlings are large enough to handle, thin them out to 30cm (12") apart.

Feed and water poppy plants frequently throughout the summer. When growing oriental poppies, deadhead faded poppy flowers regularly to encourage more blooms to be produced. Cut back old foliage to ground level in autumn. Lift and divide overcrowded clumps of Oriental poppy in spring.

I am an experienced gardener(I have successfully grew cyclamen from seeds etc in the past) but almost none of these seeds germinate. A couple appeared but they also died??? I have sown other flower/veg seeds at the same time and they are growing all right... Probably better to have them as young plants or keep special attention if you are going to try from seeds!
