Sow Oriental poppy seeds from February to May on the surface of a free draining, damp seed compost at a temperature of around 15°C (59°F). Do not cover the seed. Place in a propagator or seal container inside a polythene bag until after germination which usually takes 10-21 days. Do not exclude light at any stage, as this helps germination.
Transplant poppy seedlings when large enough to handle, into 7.5cm (3") pots or module trays. Grow on in cool, well lit conditions. When poppy plants are well grown, gradually acclimatise them to outdoor conditions for 7-10 days before planting outdoors. Plant poppies at a distance of 30cm (12") apart in a sunny position on fertile, well-drained soil. Later sowings can be overwintered in a cold frame and planted out the following spring. Alternatively, direct sow poppy seeds outdoors where they are to grow in spring or autumn. Rake the soil to a fine tilth and sow seeds thinly, just below the soil surface. Water the ground regularly, especially during dry periods. When Poppy seedlings are large enough to handle, thin them out to 30cm (12") apart.
