Pansy 'Plentifall Mixed' F1 Hybrid

Viola x wittrockiana

Hardy Perennial

 Customer Rating
This new and exciting, large flowered winter pansy has been bred to have a true trailing habit. The branching stems of Pansy 'Plentifall' bear masses of fragrant, colourful blooms that hold up better than larger-flowered types in rain and bad weather. Fill your hanging baskets with colour from autumn right through the coldest months of winter. Trails to: 45cm (18").

Culinary note: Some parts of these flowers are edible. The crystallised petals are great decorations for cakes and cookies, or they can be added straight to green salads for an injection of colour. For more details about edible flowers click here.

Sow pansies in spring or autumn on the surface of a good seed compost and gently firm down. Spring sowings will give flowers during early summer, whilst summer and autumn sowings will bloom the following winter or spring. Place the seed tray in a propagator at a temperature of 15-20C (59-68F) or seal it inside a polythene bag. Keep the soil damp but not wet. Take care not to provide too high a temperature, as this can prevent germination. Do not exclude light as this aids germination which usually takes 14-21 days.

When pansy seedlings are large enough to handle, transplant and grow them on in cooler conditions until large enough to plant outdoors. When pansy plants are well grown and all risk of frost has passed, acclimatise them to outdoor conditions over 7 to 10 days. Transplant into well drained soil in baskets and containers outdoors in full sun or semi-shade. Over winter autumn sowings in a cold frame then plant out the following spring.

Grow pansies and violas in any well drained soil, in sun or semi shade. Feed and water frequently, but take care not to overwater in winter as this can cause root damage should the compost freeze. Deadhead faded pansy flowers before they set seed to prolong the flowering period.

  1. Poor Germination Too!

    By Zulfiqar Ilahi 22-03-2017

I sowed two packets (24 seeds) in February and only four germinated! I am quite surprisd because I have never had any problems with T&M seeds. But on the plus side your other pansy seeds I purchased are doing really well. Perhaps it's worth investigating why the germination rate is so poor.

  2. Poor germination

    By Su Fo 08-10-2016

The last reviewer seems to have had success but I'm sorry to have to say that I tried this Plentifall mix twice, last year and this year and both times, the germination rate was very poor (note that I am comparing this to other viola seeds I was growing at the same time, using the same conditions and others flourished). This year, I only had three seedlings from the twelve seeds and they did not grow much at all... they are still looking small and only had one flower, so I cannot even comment on the colours available. The description of the Plentifall plants sound lovely and I really was hoping to get similar results.
