Rudbeckia x hirta hybrida 'Cherokee Sunset'®

Coneflower, Black-eyed Susan

Half-hardy Annual

As a result of over 10 years breeding and selection by T&Ms flower breeders, Rudbeckia Cherokee Sunset® was born. Never before has there been such a spectacular range of colours of fully double to semi-double Rudbeckia, with large 3-4in blooms. Shades of golden yellow, orange, bronze and mahogany make up this stunning blend that resembles the attractive colour spectrum of an Indian Sunset. Vigorous, free branching plants, with strong stems, which flower over a long period from mid summer to early autumn. Cherokee Sunset® is outstanding for adding height, colour and interest to beds, borders and large containers. Also makes an impressive cut flower. T&M are proud to be the first UK packet seed company to have an All American Selection Winning variety from its own breeding programme. This prestigious award is presented to varieties that have outstanding garden performance, quality blooms, a unique colour range and that show a significant improvement over existing varieties of the species.

Germinate at 20-30C (68-86F) on the surface of a good free draining, damp seed compost. Apply a very fine sprinkling of compost or vermiculite, but do not cover the seed completely. Place in a propagator or seal container inside a polythene bag until after germination which usually takes 10-21 days. Do not exclude light at any stage, as this helps germination.

Transplant, when large enough to handle into 7.5cm (3in) pots. Grow on in cooler conditions for 10-15 days before planting out after all risk of frost, 30cm(12in) apart.

  1. Stunning flowers

    By Karen Bruton 22-09-2015

These really are the most stunning flowers in such amazing shades of rust, gold and russet. The first batch I grew from seed didn't do so well as I hoped but they made it through winter and flowered their heads off this year. My second attempt proved much more successful and have been such a delight. They get quite tall so staking may be required unless they are able to lean up against other plants for support but certainly an eye-catching addition to the summer border. My plants are still going strong in late September - showing no signs of giving up just yet despite the pretty poor summer we've had.
