Sow February to March at 20-25C (68-77F) on the surface of a good free draining, damp seed compost. Apply a very fine sprinkling of compost or vermiculite. Place in a propagator or seal container inside a polythene bag until after germination which usually takes 10-21 days. Do not exclude light at any stage, as this helps germination.

Transplant, when large enough to handle into 7.5cm (3 inch) pots. Grow on in cooler conditons for 10-15 days before planting out after all risk of frost, 30cm (12 inches) apart.

Prefers a well drained soil in full sun. Flowers late summer to autumn.

Just 5 out of the 25 seeds germinated 20%.

  2. The loveliest of autumn yellows

    By Caroline White 22-09-2014

Germination was fine for me, but the young plants were brittle and needed careful handling when potting on. Hardening them off was essential. Their final spot is in semi shade and they are flowering their heads off in September. I wish I had crammed them in more densely as this may have encouraged deeper roots and less need for support. The colour is fantastic and looks great beside the strong blues of lobelia, and the reddening leaves of the shrubs. I'll buy these seeds again.
