Sow seeds from March to April into pots or trays of moist seed compost and cover with a fine sprinkling of vermiculite. Place in a propagator or seal container in a polythene bag and put in a warm place, and keep at a temperature of between 18-23C (65-75F). After sowing, do not exclude light as this helps germination. Keep the surface of the compost moist but not waterlogged; germination will usually take 7-21 days.

When large enough to handle, transplant seedlings into 7.5cm (3in) pots or trays. Gradually acclimatise plants to cooler conditions for a few weeks before planting out after all risk of frost, at 45-60cm (18-24in) apart.

For best results, provide a light, well-drained soil in full sun.

Caution: Irritant to skin and eyes. Harmful if eaten.

Reviews
  1. Subtle beauty

    By dave gardiner 13-11-2011

Very beautiful cottage garden look to these delicate flowers on long stems springing up from very big leaves at the plant's base. Still covered in blooms in my Liverpool garden on 13 November (despite one night of frost - a couple of weeks ago.)

  2. Absolute success

    By Amanda Lovejoy 06-11-2010

I sowed these in a greenhouse mid spring and had hundreds of plants germinate. (I shared them with friends) They made enormous leaves and filled up boarders some stayed low but most went to metre high, some higher. The flowers are all shades of deep pick to white on the the same plant. They have been an absolute picture and are still flowering now in Novemeber when most of the leaves are off the trees and we have had frost that has killed off the tops of dahlias (which made a good accompanying plant.) Easy to grow.
