Soak seeds overnight in cold water and/or file a tiny notch in the seed coat before sowing. Germinate at 20-30C (68-86F) individually in pots on the surface of a good free draining, damp seed compost. Apply a layer of compost or vermiculite, 6mm (0.25in) deep. Place in a propagator or seal container inside a polythene bag until after germination which usually takes 10-17 days.

Transplant seedlings into 13cm (5in) pots and grow on in cooler conditions for at least 14 days before planting out in late spring after all risk of frost. Plant out 30cm (12in) apart.

FOR POT PLANTS: Transplant in a soil-based compost to 20cm (8in) pots and grow in a cool, well ventilated position with shade from direct sun.

CAUTION: Seeds are poisonous.

Remove spent flowers regularly to encourage further blooming.

  1. Stunning Blue and a vigourous climber too

    By Peter Humphrey 21-09-2011

This is the second year I have grown these. Last year outside, do make sure the soil is warm, my plants sulked for a week before giving a brilliant display. This year I have them on a west facing wall in the conservatory which means the flowers last much longer. Last year the blooms faded before mid day in full sun. I have paired the Ipomea with Thunbergia alata a wonderful orange flower. The two together really make a fantastic show. The Ipomea are currently thirteen feet tall better than the six foot last year
