Meconopsis baileyi 'Hensol Violet'

Himalayan Blue Poppy, Tibetan Blue Poppy, Meconopsis betonicifolia

Hardy Perennial

The 'must-have' Himalayan Blue Poppy' has a rival in this exquisite cultivated form. Bright violet-purple, almost shimmering flowers, with the merest hint of red, make a stunning addition planted in groups in shady borders and woodland areas. Meconopsis betonicifolia 'Hensol Violet' is so named for its origins from Hensol House, Scotland, where it was discovered by Lady Henderson. Height: 90cm (36"). Spread: 30cm (12").

Pot up meconopsis plants into peaty compost and grow them on in bright, frost-free conditions with protection from strong, direct sunlight. When they are well grown, acclimatise plants to outdoor conditions over 7 to 10 days, prior to planting out in their final positions. Choose a sheltered spot in semi or dappled shade - a cool, moist woodland situation is ideal, but the Himalayan poppy will also thrive in a moist, shaded border. Meconopsis prefers a rich, moist, neutral to acid, well drained soil that remains moist throughout summer, but does not sit wet in winter.
Meconopsis poppies particularly dislike dry soils and excessive heat. Water regularly during hot, dry periods to prevent the soil from drying out. In spring, apply a mulch of chipped bark, leaf mould or other organic matter around the crown of the plant. Deadhead faded meconopsis flowers to encourage more blooms to be produced.

Reviews
  1. Sadly only one out of 4 survived :(

    By Liz Sherratt 06-09-2016

I bought two of these last year, which were rather weak and feeble on receipt and didn't survive, so T and M kindly provided replacements. The next two did slightly better, survived the winter, but they seem very fussy about exactly how much sun or shade they get and only one is alive now, still teeny tiny and nowhere near flowering this year.
