Calendula 'Power Daisy'

English Marigold, Marigold, Pot Marigold

Hardy Annual

  • In constant flower from June through to October
English pot marigolds are a garden favourite - vibrant colours, heavy flowering and great for pollinators. Sadly they don't last long, often burning out and going to seed at the height of summer. Our 'Power Daisy' changes that! Not only does it flower continuously into October, living up to its name this breeding breakthrough allows you to use calendula plants where you've never grown them before! A controlled, spreading habit, plus hundreds of yellow daisy-like blooms make them the perfect new hanging basket plant. With little need for deadheading (the flowers just keep coming without setting seed), utilise the spreading habit in patio pots and as ground cover in the border for a mass of golden colour all summer long. Height and spread 40cm (16").

Culinary note: Some parts of these flowers are edible. The light peppery taste of the flowers can be added to breads for extra flavour with a touch of colour. Calendula petals can also be used as a substitute for saffron when colouring rice dishes. For more details about edible flowers click here.

Pot up calendula plants and grow them on in frost free conditions for transplanting outdoors later on. When plants are well-grown and all risk of frost has passed, acclimatise them to outdoor conditions over a period of 7 to 10 days, before planting them in borders and containers in sun or partial shade.
Water regularly until plants are fully established. Deadhead faded calendula flowers to encourage more blooms to be produced and prevent them from self seeding. Culinary note: Calendula flowers are edible. The petals have been used as a substitute for saffron, and they make a bright and zesty addition to salads.
