The tiny tubers of Habenaria radiata are about the size of a peanut. Pot them up individually into 5cm pots, or group 3 tubers together in an 11cm container. Plant tubers in specialist orchid compost at approximately 2.5cm (1”) deep. The tubers should be planted so that the growing point (a small dark eye at one end), is facing upwards. Miniature orchids can be grown on a windowsill or in a cool greenhouse provided that they are protected from strong sunlight at all times. Once established they can even be planted into damp, shady borders outside if they are given winter protection.
In late spring, when the first shoots of Habenaria radiata appear, increase watering and feed regularly throughout the growing season. Decrease watering in the autumn as the foliage dies back. Place tubers in a cool position (0-5°C) for the winter and keep the compost just moist until the new shoots appear the following spring.

  1. Better the second year

    By Leigh Arthur 10-05-2011

Of the three tubers sent, only two survived. The tubers really are tiny, but so are the plants compared to the orchids you see in the garden centres. They died off fairly quickly after flowering, and I thought we'd lost them but kept watering over the autumn and winter just in case. I was a bit surprised, then, when they started coming through this year, and there are now five plants, not two, all with flower spikes coming.

  2. This years experiment

    By Ruth holling 02-05-2011

Was pleased with the packaging and the price. have never grown orchids so ordered some spares incase their were casulaties along the way. Planting instructions were easy to follow - would have been nice if the website suggested that I purchase orchid compost to plant them in as I didn't know that I needed this. Overall - happy - thanks
