Tubers are ideal for containers and baskets, making a larger plant in the first year than plug plants or growing from seed. From February, start tuberous begonias off in well-drained, moist compost in a warm, frost-free position in bright light. When planting begonia tubers, position them just below the compost surface with the indented side facing upwards. In hanging baskets the tubers can be planted at a 45 degree angle with their roots toward the centre, to encourage plants to cascade over the sides of the basket. When begonia plants are well grown and all risk of frost has passed, gradually acclimatise them to outdoor conditions over a period of 7 to 10 days, before planting them in their final positions. Choose a sunny or semi shaded position that is protected from strong winds.
Feed and water begonia plants frequently throughout the growing season taking care not to over-water, as this will cause new begonia flower buds to drop. Deadhead the single female begonia flowers to encourage more of the large double male flowers to be produced and to extend the flowering period.

  1. Stunning... eventually!

    By Ruth King 16-09-2016

Once these plants got going - and they were very slow compared with Organdy Mixed which romped away - they flowered and flowered and ... well, you get my drift. They're still flowering now and absolutely knock-out. Each plant varies in shade from yellow to orange via peach, pink and red. The flowers aren't pretty when they drop off in full flow, but they're easy enough to spot and scoop up off the flower and out of the shrubs! I'll definitely buy them again. Terrific value and I fully expect them to flower until the frosts come.

  2. Beautiful

    By Maria Whetton 07-09-2016

Took a while to get going. So didn't get them out till the middle of summer. Looked gorgeous when they came out though and still going strong. Have had loads of complements. Thoroughly recommend.
