Sarcococca hookeriana var. digyna (Large Plant)

Sweet Box, Christmas Box

Hardy Shrub

Fragrant flowers should have a special place in every garden. Sarcococca blooms emit a powerful fragrance during the winter; and it's so strong that it can cut through the chilly winter air too!

Sarcococca plants are tough and resilient, thriving in deep and partial shade. Plants can be grown into a low hedge similar to Box. In fact, Sarcococca is sometimes known as Sweet Box or Christmas Box.

Sarcococca hookeriana var. digyna has purple-tinged stems and the foliage is leathery and weatherproof. From winter onwards, fragrant, firecracker-like blooms appear, followed by black berries. Plant them into the border, by the back door or front door or into large patio containers. Height: 1.5m (5'). Spread: 2m (6').

Grow sarcococca in any moist, well drained garden soil in a sheltered position, in semi-shade or shade. Christmas box will tolerate full sun provided that the soil remains moist. Alternatively grow sarcococca plants in patio containers using soil based compost such as John Innes No.3.
Feed and water regularly until young shrubs become established. Once established, Sarcococca will require little attention and often thrives on neglect. Pruning is not required other than to shape the plant if required, and to remove and unwanted suckers from the base of the plant.
