Holly 'Golden King' (Standard Tree)

Ilex x altaclerensis

Hardy Tree

Standard Holly trees make fabulous specimen plants, and this one is no exception. Despite its name, Holly 'Golden King' is a self fertile female variety, so you can be sure of a fabulous display of scarlet winter berries that are always popular with birds. The glossy evergreen foliage makes an attractive year round display, enhanced by tiny white flowers in summer. These lovely evergreen trees are perfect for creating an elegant entrance to doorways or a focal point in garden borders. Compact and easy to maintain, Holly trees make excellent container plants.

Plant standard Holly trees in garden borders in any moist, well drained garden soil, in full sun or semi-shade. Alternatively grow Holly tree standards in large patio containers using soil based compost such as John Innes No.3.
Feed and water container-grown plants regularly. As plants increase in size they will require repotting into increasingly larger pots. Prune Holly standards to shape while the plants are young. Prune in summer, removing any damaged stems and trimming the head of the standard to a spherical shape. In autumn, apply a mulch of well rotted manure or garden compost to the base of border grown plants. Avoid mounding mulch up around the stem as this may cause it to rot.

Caution: Harmful if eaten.
