Trachelospermum asiaticum 'Variegata'

Variegated Star Jasmine

Hardy Shrub

  • Variegated version of a patio favourite
  • Evergreen climber for screening and privacy
  • Jasmine-scented blooms through summer

Climbing trachelospermum are grown for their fragrant jasmine flowers and dark evergreen foliage. This flashy star jasmine adds another dimension with creamy-splashed foliage perfect for lifting shady walls, fences and trelliswork. You'll be knocked out by the potent fragrance of the twinkly little blooms. The evergreen foliage also becomes tinged with crimson towards the autumn. This sturdy climber reaches 1.8m (6ft) in 3 yrs, but can also be used as trailing groundcover.

There's none of that dark sooty mould that grows on dark leaved varieties - the aphids that cause the problem just don't like variegated leaves and steer clear! Best planted in a sheltered sunny aspect to encourage the strongest perfume. Height and spread: 3m (118").

Grow star jasmine plants in frost-free conditions until large enough to plant outdoors. When they are well grown, plant Trachelospermum 'Star of Toscana' in fertile, well drained soil in sun or semi-shade. Choose a sheltered position that is protected from cold winter winds. In particularly cold areas, Trachelospermum jasminoides is best grown in patio containers of loam based compost, such as John Innes No.2, that can be moved to a protected position over winter. Provide the twining stems with an appropriate support such as trellis, wires or a free standing climbing frame.
Feed and water regularly throughout the growing season. After flowering, reduce the stems to restrict them to the available space. Caution: irritant to skin and eyes.
