Clematis cirrhosa var. purpurascens 'Freckles' (Large Plant)

Old Man's Beard

Hardy Perennial

  • Winter flowering clematis
  • Evergreen clematis
This eye-catching evergreen clematis gives a much needed injection of colour to the winter garden, when few other plants dare to bloom. This is the earliest of the spring flowering clematis, with cup-shaped pink blooms freckled with maroon-red markings, to give this plant it's name. The delicate blooms are followed by attractive fluffy seedheads that stand proud of the glossy evergreen leaves. Clematis 'Freckles' requires only minimal pruning and makes an excellent specimen for containers and borders. Height: 3m (10'). Spread: 1.5m (5'). Pruning group: 1

When planting clematis, choose a position in sun or semi-shade and plant the climber deeply in moist, fertile, well drained soil. Position the top of the rootball at a depth of 7.5cm (3”) below soil level, to encourage new shoots to form from the base of the plant. Clematis dislike soils that are particularly wet or dry. Such soils can be improved by the addition of plenty of well rotted manure or garden compost. When growing clematis in patio containers use a soil based compost such as John Innes No.3. Train clematis plants onto a suitable support such as trellis, wires or a freestanding climbing frame.
Feed and water frequently throughout the growing season. This variety of clematis flowers in late winter and early spring on the previous year’s growth. Pruning should be undertaken in summer, after flowering. When pruning Clematis 'Freckles', remove any damaged or dead stems entirely before cutting back the remaining stems to a pair of healthy buds to maintain the plant within its allotted space. In spring, apply a mulch of well rotted manure or garden compost to the base of the plant in order to protect the roots and conserve soil moisture.

Reviews
  1. Badly damaged clematis received

    By Belinda Piercy 02-05-2016

Received Freckles as the most badly damaged of 3 damaged clematis from Thompson & Morgan, due to poor packaging and delivery. Customer Services were dismissive and unhelpful. Had to prune back Freckles to half it's size as it was dying thanks to the damage, not sure yet that it will survive. I would not have bought these clematis had I known the state they would arrive in as well as subsequently receiving such poor customer service. I will not be ordering from Thompson & Morgan again.
