When to plant spring flowering bulbs in the UK

In the UK, it's best to plant spring-flowering bulbs in the autumn, ideally from September to November. This allows the bulbs to establish roots before the cold winter sets in, ensuring a good show. The exception to this rule is tulips, which should be planted in November. However, provided the ground isn’t frozen, it’s never too late to plant tulips!

How to plant spring flowering bulbs

Plant your spring bulbs at a depth of approximately 2-3 times the bulb's height, ensuring they receive adequate sunlight and are positioned in well-drained soil. You can buy a specialist bulb planting tool to help you get the correct depth. When you drop your bulbs into the hole, make sure the pointed tip is facing upwards. Space them according to the package instructions and water thoroughly.

Which spring bulbs flower first?

Snowdrops (Galanthus) and crocuses (Crocus) are among the first spring bulbs to bloom in the UK. These hardy flowers typically appear in late winter or early spring, heralding the exciting start of the new growing season.
