Description
This unusual American dwarf species is less vigorous than other wisteria varieties, reaching a mature height of 6m (20'). Wisteria frutescens 'Longwood Purple' produces rich purple racemes of pea-like flowers, which are equally showy, but slightly shorter than its Asian relations. The racemes of blooms are fuller and more rounded than other species, flowering slightly later in the season and over a longer period. Its compact growth and prolific flowering habit make Wisteria frutescens 'Longwood Purple' an ideal specimen plant for large containers and sunny walls. Height: to 6m (20'). Spread: 3m (10'). Supplied as a grafted plant.

Plant height and spread is seasonal therefore we list by pot size rather than a defined plant size. The height and spread of the plant delivered will vary depending on the season, meaning arrival images are an indication only.

How to Grow
Grow American wisteria plants in a sunny or semi-shaded position in any moist, well drained soil. A sheltered south or west facing wall is ideal and will offer some protection from late frosts which can sometimes damage young flower buds. To improve poor soils, add plenty of well rotted manure or garden compost prior to planting. Provide the twining stems with an appropriate and sturdy support, such as trellis or strong wires attached to walls and pergolas. When growing Wisteria frutescens in patio containers, use a soil based compost such as John Innes No. 3.
More Info
Feed and water Wisteria frutescens regularly throughout the spring and summer. Prune wisteria plants in July and again in February. During the first two years, prune to create a framework of permanent stems. Tie in selected lateral shoots to sturdy supports and cut back any unwanted growth. Once the desired framework has been created, continue pruning wisteria twice a year to contain the plants growth within its allotted space.
