Description
Through sales generated from the National Trust seeds, a minimum of £7,500 will be given to the National Trust to help look after nature, beauty and history for everyone, forever.

Verbena bonariensis is instantly recognisable for its tall, slender stems topped with clusters of lilac-purple flowers. The blooms take on a luminance in early evening, seeming to glow in the fading light. This mesmerising perennial is at its best when grown in large swathes, creating a haze of colour. Plant it among tall, swaying grasses, to create texture, tranquillity and movement in beds and borders. Height: 120cm (48"). Spread: 45cm (18").

Sowing

Sow Verbena from February to April on the surface of a good free draining, damp seed compost and lightly cover the seed with vermiculite. Place in a propagator or seal the seed tray inside a polythene bag, maintaining a temperature of 24-27C (75-81F) until after germination which usually takes 14-21 days. Do not exclude light as this helps germination. Keep the compost on the dry side at all times, and water lightly as seedlings emerge. When verbena seedlings are large enough to handle, transplant them into trays or 7.5cm (3”) pots and grow on in cooler conditions until large enough to plant outdoors.

When all risk of frost has passed, gradually acclimatise Verbena plants to outdoor conditions prior to transplanting them outdoors in any well drained soil in sun or semi-shade. Plant Verbena at a distance of 30cm (12”) apart.

More Info

Feed and water plants regularly until they are fully established. Verbena bonariensis flowers do not require dead heading. In autumn, apply a dry mulch of bark chips or straw to protect the crown of the plant throughout the winter months. Cut back the old stems when new shoots emerge at the base of the plant in spring.
