A piece of living art hand crafted in the UK for your garden. The Willow Wand® is made from 9 living willow whips, expertly selected and hand woven by master weavers which, over time, will fuse together. The stem height will never change, but the topiary crown of the Willow Wand® will become dense and bushy and can be shaped to your liking.
Over the first few seasons, the separate strands of the Willow Wand® will graft together to become one single trunk whilst retaining its beautiful twisted features.
Use one Willow Wand® as a single living sculpture, or plant multiple wands in a row for unique and attractive standard hedge, or dot several around the garden as a connecting feature. Plant them directly into borders or grow them in a large patio container. Being Willow, these plants will require minimum attention and are totally hardy and weatherproof!
Ultimate height and spread will depend on how you choose to shape your willow, however the following dimensions may be taken as a rough guide if Willow Wands® are pruned regularly.
2 x 123cm extra large Willow Wand (TKA4015P)
2 x 98cm large Willow Wand (TKA4013P)
2 x 73cm medium Willow Wand (TKA4011P)
1 x 123cm extra large Willow Wand (KA4014)
1 x 98cm large Willow Wand (KA4012)
1 x 73cm medium Willow Wand (KA4010)
On arrival, plant The Willow Wand® immediately. If planting must be delayed then stand the stems outdoors in 10cm of water for a maximum of 4 days. The Willow Wand® must be planted before the roots reach 2cm in length.
You will notice a plastic tie at one end of the wand. This tie indicates the base of the plant. The plastic tie must be left in place to prevent the stems unravelling. The top end of the wand is held together with a decorative willow tie. This should also be left in place for the time being.
Plant the base of the stems (the end with a plastic tie) in any sunny or partially shaded position. Plant in any well drained soil outdoors, to a depth of approximately 15cm (6") and firm them well into the ground. Alternatively, plant them in containers of soil based compost such as John Innes No. 3.
Soak the soil with water immediately after planting and water daily for the first 4 weeks after planting keep the soil moist at all times, thereby enabling establishment .
Once established, buds will begin to break along the length of the stems. Those that develop above the decorative collar should be left to grow – these will form the crown of the plant. Any buds below the decorative collar should be rubbed off to prevent their development and retain the woven effect of the stem. After the second season, the stem buds will diminish as the main crown develops.
Once established, feed and water The Willow Wand® regularly. The soil must not be allowed to dry out.
The Willow Wand® should be pruned regularly, at least twice in the first season after planting, in order to establish an attractive, bushy crown. For a dense topiary-like crown, the stems of the crown can be trimmed by half every few weeks throughout the summer. For a looser crown, simply prune the tips of the crown once they reach 20cm (8") in length.
