Perfect for planting en masse, filling gaps in borders or elevating container displays, this bumper bulb collection will fill your summer garden with splashes of gorgeous colour for year after year. The show begins in June with the pastel spires of Ixia offsetting the vivid blue starry blooms of Brodiaea ‘Queen Fabiola’. After a long and glorious summer, the display is carried into autumn by the soft mauve heads of Liatris spicata, which harmonise with the purple-painted foliage and deep salmon flowers of Oxalis ‘Iron Cross’.
999 Summer Flowering Bulbs Collection contains:
Oxalis ‘Iron Cross’ (160 bulbs) – Oxalis are fascinating little alpines with bright funnel-shaped blooms in late summer and autumn. This hardy ornamental shamrock bears delicate, deep salmon flowers above four-leaf-clover-shaped bright green leaves with a dark purple band at the base of each leaflet. Height and spread: 15cm (6").
Gladiolus murielae (90 bulbs) – Also known Acidanthera or Peacock Orchid, these summer blooming gladioli have upright, sword-like foliage and exotic, starry flowers with maroon patterning at the centre. These elegant blooms are graced with a wonderful scent and make long-lasting cut flowers. Height: 90cm (36"). Spread: 30cm (12").
Brodiaea ‘Queen Fabiola’ (160 bulbs) – Also known as Triteleia. Starry clusters of deep blue flowers burst from clumps of fine, grass-like foliage in late spring and early summer. Individual flowers open continuously for a month or more, extending the bloom time. Also makes an excellent, long lasting cut flower. Attractive to butterflies and other insects. Height: 30cm. Spread: 15cm (6”).
Ixia Mix (265 bulbs) – the South African Corn Lily throws up spires of starry blooms on slender, upright stems from early summer onwards. These half-hardy bulbs thrive in sunny borders, greenhouses, containers, or in a sheltered spot at the base of a wall. Simply lift the bulbs each autumn and store them through the coldest months, before replanting in the following spring. Cut a few flowers for a beautiful and long-lasting bouquet. Height: 40cm (16"). Spread: 20cm (8").
Sparaxis Mix (84 bulbs) – Also known as Harlequin Flower, this exotic-looking plant produces funnel-shaped flowers in an array of bright colours, each with a contrasting centre. The eye-catching blooms emerge above sword-shaped foliage in early summer, held on sturdy stems that are ideal for cutting. Plant Sparaxis in groups for a dramatic display in rock gardens, greenhouses or sheltered borders where winter protection can be provided. Height: 30cm (12"). Spread: 10cm (4").
Liatris spicata (240 bulbs) – A showy, yet easy-to-grow plant bearing plumes of mauve florets, which make a colourful display in late summer. The nectar-rich flowers attract clouds of bees and butterflies and make an excellent addition to cut flower arrangements. A resilient and undemanding perennial for almost any part of the garden. Height: 150cm (60"). Spread: 45cm (18").
