Description Sowing More Info Delivery Reviews

From recent British breeding, an easy-to-grow, early-maturing variety, well suited to our summers. The flattened round-shaped fruits combine the attractive skin colour of a Butternut with the shape of Crown Prince. An average of 5 fruits per plant, each weighing 1.5kgs (approx 3lbs) develop on semi trailing vines. Fruits have a rich orange flesh with a 'melon aroma', and a small seed cavity. Stores well.

Culinary note: Some parts of these flowers are edible. For more details about edible flowers click here.

Keep well watered throughout the season. Feed and mulch regularly.

Sow May to early June. Sow seed 2cm (0.75in) deep in 7.5cm (3in) pots of good seed compost at 21-25C (70-77F). Place in a propagator or seal container in a polythene bag until after germination which takes 7-10 days. Can also be sown direct outdoors once the soil has warmed. Do not sow in cold soils. Sow 2 seeds every 90cm (36in) and thin out to the best seedling. Ideally grow under cloches until the plant is established.

Gradually acclimatise to outdoor conditions for a few days before planting out after all risk of frost has passed, 90cm (36in) apart each way.

Great but not great 2016-12-09

I got a fantastic number of smashes from the 10 seeds and couldn't believe the great harvest. However the case was poor and they didn't keep very long and by the November they had all rotted. They were kept on a brick but frost free garage but still didn't keep.

Great flavour 2016-10-19

In contrast to the other reviews I found this variety pretty successful! Plants typically produced 3-4 fruits of which 3 were a good size. Very good flavour when roasted.

T&M replied on 2016-10-20: Thank you very much for your review. I am glad that you have been happy with your purchase and thank you so much for taking the time to let us know. I hope we can continue to be of service to you in the future.

All boys! 2015-06-10

I had the opposite problem! Vigorous plants with loads of leaf and male flowers swamping the garden. I cut them back and the stress might have encouraged them to fruit because a few females then started to develop ; 1 fruit off one plant and 4 off the other. Haven't tasted them yet though!
