Flowering Months
Feed harlequin flower bulbs monthly and water moderately while they are in active growth. After flowering, reduce watering and allow the soil to dry out in order to provide the bulbs with a dry, dormant period. Sparaxis bulbs that are grown outdoors should be mulched with chipped bark to protect them from cold wet weather over winter. Move patio containers to a frost free position over winter.
Grow sparaxis bulbs in containers, raised beds or sheltered borders in any well drained soil in full sun. Plant them at a depth of 10cm (4"). In frost prone areas, they are best grown in a greenhouse or conservatory, or planted in containers which can be moved to a frost-free position over winter. Use a loam based compost such as John Innes No.2 with added grit to improve drainage.
