How to Grow
Solenostemon scutellarioides ‘Mix’ presents a dazzling kaleidoscope of chartreuse, scarlet, pink, gold and maroon, showcasing the very best of these wonderfully versatile foliage plants. The velvety leaves are irresistibly strokable and held in graceful tiers, each leaf elegantly pointed and finished with a serrated edge. The intricate details of each variety will captivate you throughout the season, with painterly splashes, finely drawn veining and picotee edging. Better still, these are tough, unfussy plants shaking off wind, adapting to rain or shine and readily pushing out bushy branches of alluring foliage that don’t require pinching out and will light up your bedding displays with exciting new colour combinations. Pot up Coleus plug plants and grow them on in warm frost-free conditions for transplanting later on. Pinch out the growing tip of each stem to encourage branching and form a bushier plant. When all risk of frost has passed, gradually acclimatise painted nettle plants to outdoor conditions over a period of 7 to 10 days, before transplanting them outdoors into beds, borders and containers. Plant Coleus plants in fertile, moist, well-drained soil in a sunny or semi-shaded position. Solenostemon can also be grown as houseplants, situated on a warm, bright window sill or in a conservatory or heated greenhouse.
More Info Feed and water Coleus plants regularly, particularly during hot, dry periods. Remove any developing flower spikes as they will weaken the plant and cause poor quality foliage. Coleus houseplants should be given full light and a warm position in the winter months. Reduce watering and keep the compost just moist to prevent rotting and fungal diseases developing. Pinch back Solenostemon plants in the spring as growth resumes.
