Description

The Kew Pollinators range of seeds from Thompson and Morgan has been specially created alongside the experts at Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew to attract and support a wide range of pollinators, including bees, butterflies and beetles, as well as a number of other important pollinating insects. Helping these pollinators to thrive is hugely important for our eco-system as a whole and these seeds, in their striking packaging inspired by artwork from the Kew archives, will help to create the environment which they need to thrive, with varieties chosen to help a wide range of pollinating insects, including some night flowering plants to help moths which also play an important part in our gardens.

Commonly known as Night-flowering Catchfly, this pretty wildflower is a magnet for moths in late summer. The delicate blooms release their perfume in the evenings to attract these pollinating insects. Silene noctiflora is a dainty annual that blends effortlessly with Scabious, Cranesbill and other meadow wildflowers. Once established it will seed about, with the seed remaining viable in the soil for many years. A great choice for gardens on chalky soils, especially as part of a wildlife planting scheme or meadow. Height and spread: 40cm (16”).

Sowing

Sow Silene noctiflora seed from March to May at a depth of 2mm in a good, free-draining, damp, seed or multipurpose compost. Cover with a light sprinkling of vermiculite. Place container in a propagator or seal inside a plastic bag and place at a temperature of 15-20C (59-68F) until after germination which can take 7-14 days. Do not exclude light, as this helps germination.

When seedlings are large enough to handle, transplant them into trays or 7.5cm (3”) pots and grow them on in cooler conditions. When plants are well grown, and all risk of frost pas passed, gradually acclimatize them to outdoor conditions over 7 – 10 days before planting out in any moist, well drained soil in sun or semi shade at a distance of 30cm (12”) apart.

Alternatively direct sow outdoors from April to May where plants are to flower. Sow at a depth of 3mm, in soil that has been raked to a fine tilth. When seedlings are large enough to handle, thin to 20cm (8”) apart.

More Info
Water silene plants regularly until they are fully established. Lift and divide overcrowded clumps in spring. Silene self-seeds freely. If seedlings are not wanted, deadhead stems of silene flowers as the blooms fade.
