Description

Semponium is a ground-breaking, world-first cross between Sempervivum and Aeonium. The stunning and unique rosettes of Aeonium are combined with the hardiness of Sempervivum to create vigorous hybrids in a range of completely new and unique natural colours. Endlessly versatile, these specimen succulents are sure to draw everyone’s attention whether they are displayed in a patio pot, used as gap-fillers in an exotic border or planted out in a rockery or gravel garden. This must-have trio brings together the three Semponiums bred so far, bearing fascinatingly unusual and perfectly geometric rosettes of glossy, fleshy leaves in an array of contrasting jewel-like colours. The young plants will soon branch out to form superbly bushy multi-headed specimens.

Semponium Collection contains:

  • Semponium ‘Destiny’ – striking rosettes of deepest purple, almost black spoon-shaped leaves
  • Semponium ‘Sienna’ – unique bright red rosettes whose colour is intensified by strong sunlight, with lime green centres
  • Semponium ‘Diamond’ – perfectly formed rosettes of pointed lime green leaves, each outlined in bright red when in strong sunlight.

Height and spread: 40cm (16in).

How to Grow

Pot up plugs plants and grow them on in warm, frost free conditions. When all risk of frost has passed, gradually acclimatise plants to outdoor conditions over 7-10 days before moving to their permanent positions. Grow Semponium plants in well drained, sandy or gritty soil in sun or light, semi shade.

Whilst Semponiums are hardier than Aeoniums, and are thought to be hardy down to around -4C, in colder parts of the UK they are best grown in pots where they can be moved to a greenhouse or conservatory during particularly cold periods.

More Info

Water moderately and feed occasionally while Semponiums are in active growth. Avoid watering between late autumn and spring while plants are dormant.

Though hardier than Aeoniums, Semponiums should be moved to a frost-free position on sub-zero winter nights.
