Description Sowing More Info Delivery Reviews
A red flowered RHS AGM variety producing long, smooth, slender pods that easily reach 35cm (14") long. The heavy yields are best picked while young and tender to ensure a long cropping period. Although the pods of Runner Bean 'Wisley Magic' are not completely stringless, they have a low fibre content and a superior flavour - that 'old fashioned' runner bean taste. Height: 3m (10'). Spread: 30cm (12").

These vegetable seeds are endorsed by the RHS.

Companion planting: Try growing runner beans with sweet peas to attract pollinating insects to the flowers, and Nasturtiums to draw aphids away from your crop.

Sowing Months Flowering Months Harvest Months
When growing runner beans provide a thick mulch of organic matter around the base of the plants to help conserve moisture and reduce weed growth. Water runner beans regularly, particularly as the flowers develop, and provide a liquid feed every 14 days during mid-summer. Pinch out the tips of the beans when they reach the top of their supports. Beans can be harvested from July onwards. Pick the beans regularly and a little on the young side to ensure top quality and prolonged cropping. Culinary note: Suitable for freezing. Caution: Cook runner beans before eating to avoid discomfort.

Sow runner bean seed indoors from mid April for transplanting later on, or direct sow outdoors from late May to July.

Indoors, sow seed at a depth of 5cm (2") in 7.5cm (3") pots or trays of free-draining, seed sowing compost. Place in a propagator or seal container inside a plastic bag at a temperature of 18-20C (64-68F) until germination which takes 7-10 days. Once germinated, grow runner beans on in cooler conditions until all risk of frost has passed and runner bean plants are large enough to be transplanted. Gradually acclimatise them to outdoor conditions over 7 - 10 days before planting runner beans outdoors in rich fertile, well drained soil in full sun or semi shade with protection from strong winds. Avoid freshly manured soil which will promote lush foliage instead of beans.

Alternatively direct sow runner beans outdoors at a depth of 5cm (2") and a distance of 30cm (12") apart. Plant runner beans in rows that are 1.5m (5') apart, or where space is limited, grow beans onto a wigwam structure. Runner beans require support from garden canes, strings or netting which should be put in place at the time of planting.

Best runners I have ever grown 2014-08-31

I have grown runners for years with mixed results. Wisley Magic have been superb this year. Good Summer with rain has helped and I water them well. I am on clay soil with lots of added compost. Not much leaf to begin with but loads of flowers, leaf is better now but the beans just keep on coming. I am ruthless and remove all over mature pods. Still loads of new beans coming. Very long straight pods and delicious. A sure winner.

Grew them on well fertilised clay soil. Well watered. Magnificent crops. Good job we like runners. When they taste as good as these you don't get tired of them. Mind you I'm fussy when I prepare them. I use one of those little plastic slicers and reject the outer layers which go to the chickens. Boil for 10 minutes, drain, add butter black pepper and a drop of Maggi liquid seasoning. Can't get enough of them, I'll be sad when the season ends 'cos I hate frozen runners. They make good chutney though.

I grew this variety this year and had a very good crop with beans 450mm long! A very good crop and good taste. I will be growing them again next year for sure.

This was the first time I have grown this variety and I have never had such a good crop. There were so many beans that the netting they were growing up was pulled off the fence. A very tasty bean.
