Description
This lovely miniature rose is bred for improved germination making it easy to grow from seed. Flowering in its first year from an early sowing, Rose multiflora nana perpetua 'Garden Party' produces wide, open blooms in delicate shades of rose and pale pink. Perfect for edging beds and borders or growing in containers as an attractive centre piece for the patio table. Height: 25cm (10"). Spread: 35cm (14").

Culinary note: Some parts of these flowers are edible. Rosehips and petals can be used in making syrups and the petals will add flavour to cold drinks or fruit dishes. For more details about edible flowers click here.

Companion planting: Try growing roses with garlic, chives, thyme or mint to help deter aphids and blackfly.

Sowing

Sow Rose seeds from January to May on the surface of a good seed compost and lightly cover with a fine sprinkling of compost or vermiculite. Place the seed tray in a propagator at a temperature of 18-20C (64-68F) or seal it inside a polythene bag. Keep the compost damp and do not exclude light as this aids germination, which usually takes up to 30-90 days.

When seedlings are large enough to handle, transplant and grow them on in cooler conditions until large enough to plant outdoors. When Rose plants are well grown and all risk of frost has passed, acclimatise them to outdoor conditions over 7 to 10 days. Transplant outdoors in full sun on any moist, rich fertile, well drained soil at a distance of 35cm (14") apart.

More Info
Feed and water rose plants regularly and deadhead faded flowers. When growing roses it is necessary to remove any suckers that arise from the base of the plant, below the graft union. In late summer, begin pruning species roses by removing dead and diseased wood, and any rubbing or damaged branches. Then reduce all stems by up to a third of their length. Apply a mulch of well rotted manure or compost to the base of the plant after pruning.
