Description How to Grow More Info Delivery

This hardy ornamental currant could be mistaken for a scarlet fuchsia! But no fuchsia will flower in the garden in January! Ribes speciosum is one of the best shrubs you can add to the winter scene, flowering at the same time as the earliest daffodils. Frost hardy, coming with an RHS Award of Garden Merit, it really is a sight to behold when trained tall on a sunny wall. It’s hanging rich-red blooms and ‘varnished’ green foliage hide prickly stems - a perfectly pretty security plant. Also makes a decorative hedging plant, coping well with regular pruning. Height: 250cm (98"). Spread: 150cm (59").

Flowering Months
Water regularly throughout the growing season until young plants are fully established. In spring, apply a mulch of well rotted manure or garden compost to the base of the plant. Ribes requires little pruning. After flowering cut back stems to a healthy bud and remove a fifth of the old stems to ground level.
Grow Ribes in a sunny position, in any well drained soil. Ribes odoratum will happily grow in a semi-shaded spot but may produce fewer flowers and berries. Prior to planting, incorporate plenty of well rotted manure or garden compost into the soil. Plant Flowering Currant shrubs at the same depth as they were planted in their pots. Backfill the planting hole and water well to settle the soil.
