This stylish evergreen hybrid will certainly bring some flair to the garden. In late spring, rounded trusses of bright pink blooms stand out beautifully against the dark, lustrous foliage. Each vibrant flower is flecked with crimson red at the throat, which becomes more prominent as the petals gently fade to soft pink as they age. Rhododendron 'Cosmopolitan' is a dense plant with a neat upright habit. A fine addition to acid borders! Height: 250cm (98"). Spread: 150cm (59").

How to Grow

Grow Rhododendrons in moist, well drained, acid soil that has been enriched with plenty of well rotted organic matter. Choose a position in semi or dappled shade with shelter from cold drying winds. Many dwarf Rhododendrons can cope with a sunny position provided that the soil remains reliably moist. Where soil conditions are alkaline, Rhododendron plants are best grown in patio containers, using a mix of ericaceous compost and a soil based compost such as John Innes No. 3. Rhododendrons are surface rooting so it is important to avoid planting them too deeply.

Water Rhododendron plants regularly throughout the growing season. Where possible, use rainwater as the lime contained in tap water will reduce the acidity in the soil over time. Feed Rhododendrons in spring with a slow release fertiliser for acid-loving plants. Protect plants from cold winter winds. Border grown Rhododendrons will appreciate an autumn mulch to protect their shallow roots from winter cold. Take care not to mound the mulch too close to the stem as this may cause it to rot. If necessary, lightly prune Rhododendron plants in June to remove damaged shoots and restrict size.
