Description
These dwarf trailing succulents simply love hot, dry conditions, making them perfect for ground cover, tumbling down banks or spilling out from rockeries. The large, semi double blooms open in full sun to reveal their spectacular tropical colours against a backdrop of fleshy foliage. Portulaca grandiflora 'Happy Hour Mixture' is drought tolerant once established and copes well with coastal conditions. Height: 25cm (10"). Spread: 30cm (12").

Sowing

Sow Portulaca seed from February to March on the surface of a good seed compost, and gently firm down. Do not cover the seed. Place in a propagator at a temperature of 18-21C (64-70F) or seal the seed tray inside a polythene bag until after germination, which usually takes 7- 14 days. Do not exclude light, as this helps germination.

When seedlings are large enough to handle, transplant into 7.5cm (3") pots and grow on in cooler conditions. When Portulaca plants are well grown and all risk of frost has passed, gradually acclimatise them to outdoor conditions for 10-15 days before planting outdoors. Grow Portulaca in full sun on any light, well drained soil, spaced at a distance of 30cm (12") apart.

CAUTION: Portulaca seeds are dust-like. To open packet, hold over a sheet of white paper, cut along three sides of the inner pack and carefully open out flat. Tap the packet gently to dislodge the seed.

More Info
Feed and water Portulaca plants until fully established. Once established they require little attention and cope well on dry soils.
