Description

Shrubs with dark foliage create depth and interest in a garden and contrast beautifully with lighter or brighter coloured plants. Physocarpus opulifolius 'Brown Sugar' has elegant, arching branches and deep red stems adorned with luxurious, dark chocolate foliage with purple tints. This is a multi-season performer producing balls of pinkish-white flowers in summer followed by red berries in the autumn. It looks excellent combined with hot reds and yellows or cool whites. Height: 150cm (59”). Spread: 150cm (59”).

Plant height and spread is seasonal therefore we list by pot size rather than a defined plant size. The height and spread of the plant delivered will vary depending on the season, meaning arrival images are an indication only.

1 x 2 litre potted plant (KC5202)

How to Grow
Plant Physocarpus in a fertile, moist, well-drained soil in full sun or semi-shade. Physocarpus plants prefer an acid to neutral soil, but will tolerate more alkaline soils, although may they may become chlorotic in very chalky areas. Incorporate organic matter such as well-rotted manure or compost into the soil prior to planting.
More Info
Water regularly throughout the growing season until young Physocarpus plants are fully established. In spring, apply a mulch of well rotted manure or compost to the base of the plant. After flowering, cut back the flowered shoots to a healthy pair of buds, unless seedheads are required for late season interest. Physocarpus opulifolius tolerates fairly hard pruning and may be cut back by half every few years to maintain a smaller size. On mature plants cut back about one quarter to one fifth of the oldest shoots to their base, to promote strong new growth.
