Description
Ornamental grasses add an architectural element to planting schemes, while their airy foliage adds movement as it catches the breeze. Pennisetum 'Blackjack' went down a storm in our summer trial garden! The shimmering, deep purple stems go on to produce black feathery plumes throughout the summer. The fluffy seedheads can be cut to make elegant dried flowers or left on the plants to give garden birds a seasonal treat. Add these pennisetum plants to beds, borders and containers to get the designer's look in your garden this season. Height: 1.2m (4'). Spread: 45cm (18")

How to Grow
Pot up plants and grow them on in warm frost free conditions for transplanting into beds, borders and containers later on. Water sparingly until pennisetum plants are fully rooted into their containers. When they are well grown, and all risk of frost has passed, gradually acclimatise them to outdoor conditions over a period of 7 to 10 days. Plant fountain grass in moist, light, well drained soil in full sun.
More Info
Take care not to overwater as Pennisetum plants may rot in over-wet soils. Although plants are hardy, they will benefit from the added protection of a dry mulch of bark or straw to protect the crown of the plant over the winter. Once you have enjoyed the autumn and winter interest of this plant, you should cut back any dead foliage and faded flowers in the spring.
